5.3 Make consistent and comparable judgements
Proficient: Understand and participate in assessment moderation activities to support consistent and comparable judgements of student learning.
Whilst on a five week teaching block I took part in an initial moderating session with teachers from other schools within the region. I was part of a group looking at year four English assessments in relation to the Achievement Standards directed by the Australian Curriculum. The group decided to focus on one part of the standard with particular regard to 'information texts' as indicated in red below. Each teacher needs to bring students work samples to the next meeting - one at below the standard, one meeting the standard, and one exceeding the standard. These can then be compared among the teachers for moderation within the region. I have requested that I take part in this second meeting even if I am not working at the school on that day. I see this as a valuable experience in moderation and assessment.
Australian Curriculum as at 18/07/2014:
Year 4 Achievement StandardReceptive modes (listening, reading and viewing)By the end of Year 4, students understand that texts have different text structures depending on purpose and audience. They explain how language features, images and vocabulary are used to engage the interest of audiences.
They describe literal and implied meaning connecting ideas in different texts. They express preferences for particular texts, and respond to others’ viewpoints. They listen for key points in discussions.
Productive modes (speaking, writing and creating)Students use language features to create coherence and add detail to their texts. They understand how to express an opinion based on information in a text. They create texts that show understanding of how images and detail can be used to extend key ideas.
Students create structured texts to explain ideas for different audiences. They make presentations and contribute actively to class and group discussions, varying language according to context. They demonstrate understanding of grammar, select vocabulary from a range of resources and use accurate spelling and punctuation, editing their work to improve meaning.
